Welcome to Coto Japanese Club
We are so excited to be welcoming students and friends past, present and future to our shiny new Coto Japanese Club in the heart of Azabu-juban in Minato-ku. We would love you to pop in during our Open House on 9 February to get a taste of our new learning experience in this charming neighbourhood.
Coto is all about learning the level of Japanese you personally need to thrive in this thrilling, but occasionally bewildering, metropolis. At Coto Japanese Club, we have taken our popular existing courses and tailored the contents, pace and schedule to suit the busy lives of expats in central Tokyo. The Club interior has been designed to feel like your Japanese language “home”, a place where you can take a scheduled lesson, drop in for decent coffee and Japanese conversation, or simply somewhere to crush your Japanese homework away from distractions.
Everyone needs an entry point into a new culture, something beyond just verb forms, to reveal the deeper joy and subtlety of a country. Each country offers different entry points. Food is one obvious way in, but for others it can be literature, anime, fashion, tea, music, art, philosophy or politics. Each month we will be hosting three different sorts of events that will be guaranteed to inspire great conversation and new international friendships. Our Japanese Book Group will sometimes meet during the day over coffee to discuss a novel in English translation, or will meet in the evening over drinks in a Meet the Author format. We are teaming up with a film distributor to host a monthly Japanese Film Night, so you will no longer be limited to satisfying your subtitled Japanese film fix on long-haul flights. And to really get you talking and thinking, we have The Coto Interview: On the Sofa with Karen, when we invite a journalist, entrepreneur, artist, commentator or person in the news for a free and frank exchange of ideas among the soft furnishings.
Language dies if we do not use it. Our hope is that our combination of classes and events will get us all speaking, thinking and breathing Japanese; making new friends through study, inquiry, coffee, Murakami and laughter.
